A study of an old friend who lived by the river.
MAN WILLOW is a portrait of a beautiful and venerable old willow tree, which used to live as the guardian of a bend in the River Lambourn at Bockhampton.
He was by far the biggest (oldest) for many miles. He was a full tree when I first knew him - with Tarzan ropes and plenty of shade for the kids to swim under in the summers. Then over time, he began to collapse, and eventually die.
This plate (drawn directly onto the copper plate from life) shows him in the last sad throws before his demise. He had seen a lot in his life ... as reflected in the folds and twists of his skin/bark.
