A farmer off to market ...

BRINGING HOME THE BACON is a design for a public sculpture which was to be placed in the heart of Chelmsford's then new shopping district.

Sioban had known this old market town since childhood, and remembered its agricultural roots. The centre's domination by a supermarket lead Sioban to consider an updated version of the ever resourceful farmer's task of 'taking his pig to market' ...

The piece was intended to use accessibility and humour to re-connect people with the land and with where their food comes from - probably an idea more suited to today's sensitivities.

However, the media decided that the sculpture was highly contentious (!) and ran an extremely effective campaign to rubbish the design - it even made it into the Times. The developers who had commissioned the piece pulled out, although they went on to commission a sculpture on one of their own sites at a later date (MRS HEDGES).
