'BLOWN AWAY' @ SANDHAM
EXTENDED VISIT!

Until 31st October 2014

LATEST NEWS! BLOWN AWAY is only at Sandham until the end of the season.

'BLOWN AWAY' transferred from THE GARDEN GALLERY to the SANDHAM MEMORIAL CHAPEL at the beginning of August in time for the reopening, following restoration and the creation of a new garden, designed by Daniel Lobb.

The Chapel, which belongs to the National Trust, houses a series of masterly large-scale murals painted by Sir Stanley Spencer, inspired by his experiences as a medical orderly, and soldier in Salonika, Macedonia, during WW1.

Alison Paton, Steward of the Sandham Memorial Chapel, says, "We have affectionately called Blown Away 'Sydney'. Sydney was one of Stanleys older brothers who was killed in the First World War which utterly devastated Stanley. Stanleys eldest daughter Shirin was deeply and visibly moved by the decision to give the sculpture this nickname.

Volunteers from Tedworth House, a recovery centre funded by Help for Heroes for injured or sick members of the armed forces, helped to create the garden. They have commented that: BLOWN AWAY puts a face on the unknown soldier. For some, the title of the sculpture: gets to the thrust of the rawness of emotion when you have PTSD.

In the short time since the Chapel reopened Blown Away has become an integral part of the garden, popular with visitors and volunteers.

Although visitors, volunteers and staff at Sandham alike, had understood that it would be possible to raise funds to be able to keep BLOWN AWAY there permanently, today it was announced that this was a not going to be possible.

However disappointing, the good news is that the loan of the sculpture has been extended until the 31st of October!

So there is still time to visit Sandham, and enjoy the paintings, the Chapel, the reflective garden and BLOWN AWAY, all together.

BLOWN AWAY
Bronze & rusted steel : unique
Overall height 1.75m base 80 cm diam.

A study of a moment. The young man, his life fleeting as a gust of laurel
leaves, he sees the whole world in a glance.

Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future
- T. S. ELIOT

Inspired by Eliot's Four Quartets, this piece pays homage to so many
brave people whose lives are altered by their time.

The plinth fabricated in
mild steel is reminiscent of hastily dispatched munitions,or ships funnel
left to rust. Its stripes of bronze reflect adopted strength.
